According to South Korean media reports (further reported by Satellite News Digest) South Korea’s scientific satellite, STSAT 2C, has apparently failed in orbit. All contact was lost with the satellite during September. The satellite was still within its two (corrected) year design life when the failure happened.
The STSAT-2C satellite was built by SATREC Initiative (KAIST subsidiary) for the KARI – Korean Advanced Research Institute and was launched by a KSLV-1 (NARO-1) in January 2014. The spacecraft carried a Langmuir probe to measure ionospheric properties and SREM instrument to measure radiation effects. Technology payloads included a Laser Retroflector Array (LRA) for position measurement and other systems (RWA, IRS and FSO) for test.
