The Atlas V launch of the NASA Mars InSight (INSIGHT – INterior exploration using Seismic Investigations Geodesy and HeatTransport) mission has been delayed by two years from its planned March 2016 launch date due to a leak in the vacuum-sealed titanium spherical container that holds one a instrument, known as SEIS. Supplied by the French space agency (CNES), the Seismic Experiment of Interior Structure (SEIS) instrument is designed to take seismic readings of “Marsquakes” to discover more about the interior of the planet. A full investigation into the cause of the leak and why it could not be repaired in time is underway.
