The UK space industry got an £80 million boost from the UK government in December as part of a new £455 million, five-year package within the government’s autumn budget revision to fund bilateral science-based deals with emerging market economies including China and India. Science minister David Willetts, speaking at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory space conference at Harwell, also announced £7 million towards a £14 million plan to bolster the Harwell campus’s role as a “UK space gateway”, and a £60 million cap for private companies on what had been unlimited liability for space mission damages. Joint Sino-UK unmanned missions to the moon have been cited as possible future space projects. Dan Thisdell contributed to this report.
