UAE-based Fixed Satellite Service (FSS) operator Al Yah Satellite Communications Company – better known as Yahsat – have announced that they have entered into an agreement to purchase a majority stake in fellow UAE-based Mobile Satellite Service (MSS) company Thuraya Telecommunications Company (Thuraya).
Once the deal is closed Thuraya’s two in-orbit spacecraft, THURAYA 2 and 3, will become part of Yahsat’s fleet bringing its satellite count to five. The resulting fleet will be able to provide fixed and mobile services in Ka-, Ku-, C- and L-bands over Europe, Africa, Middle East, South America and Asia.
Financial aspects of the deal have not been disclosed by the companies.
