Visiona Technologia Especial (a joint venture between Telebras and Embraer) has officially selected the Ariane 5 rocket of European launch provider Arianespace’to launch the SGDC-1 Geostationary Defence and Strategic Communications Satellite for Brazil. The satellite’s services are to be primarily used by the Brazilian Ministry of Defence. This announcement confirms an original launch booking made by Thales Alenia Space as part of construction order. The official launch order announcement was on 9 September 2013. The 5,800kg satellites will be launched by an Ariane 5 launch vehicle in 2016 from the Kourou launch site in French Guiana.
