At 0423 GMT on 15 May 2016, a Long March 2D/2 rocket lifted off from the Jiuquan launch site in China. Aboard was the Yaogan 30 – a satellite which is officially to be used for remote sensing and crop monitoring etc but is thought by Western analysts to be a military reconnaissance satellite for China. The spacecraft was placed into a 653 x 625 km near polar sun-synchronous low Earth orbit at 98.1 degrees inclination relative to the equatorial plane.
