International Space Station (ISS) astronaut Scott Kelly was apparently thrilled to tweet an image of a successfully grown Xinnia flower blooming in orbit. However, his claim that was the first ever flower grown in space was soon shown not to be correct. In fact, cosmonauts on Salyuz-7 managed to grow some Arabidopsis flowers and even produced seeds in orbit back in 1982. And there have been several other types of flower grown since including some on the ISS.
Still its orange colour at least makes it look nice and cheery, and hydroponically grown edible flowers may one day form part of the diet of long range space travellers.
