The Goes-12 (GOES 12) spacecraft has been formally retired and sent to a “graveyard” orbit on 16 August. The spacecraft served as a weather satellite for the US National Oceanic and Atmopsheric Administration (NOAA) since its launch in July 2001. In fact, the spacecraft lasted for more than double its five year minimum design life. It was the main Goes-East satellite until 2010 when it was replaced by Goes-13. Goes-12 was then moved to cover South America until its retirement.
