The Boeing-built navigation satellite, GPS IIF-8, has been successfully launched towards its Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) destination by an Atlas V 401 rocket. The launch took place from the Cape Canaveral launch site in Florida, USA, at 1721 GMT on 29 October 2014. The 1.6 metric ton satellite is officially military as it is operated by the US Air Force. However, now that GPS navigation systems are common around the world, it could be said to have a secondary commercial use via its unencrypted signal. The launch was provided by the joint Boeing-Lockheed Martin firm, the United Launch Alliance (ULA). The flight was the 50th Atlas V flown.
