Some 45 years after it was first postulated by Prof. Peter Higgs, scientists at the Large Hadron Collider in Cern on the Franco-Swiss border, believe that they have discovered the Higg’s Boson (aka the “God Particle”), the sub-atomic particle that is said to unify subatomic particle theories.
The particle was detected to a 5-sigma (standard deviation) confidence level at the expected gigaelectron-volt level predicted for a Higg’s Boson. However, scientists were said to be exercising caution over some of the properties of this new particle which did not quite conform to those expectated for the Higg’s Boson in the “Standard Model” of the Universe.
