The Superbird 8 communications satellite was ordered from Mitsubishi Electric Corp (MELCO) with this order being announced by Sky Perfect JSAT Corporation on 25 April 2014. The satellite, which is to use the DS-2000 bus design is expected to be launched in early 2016, will replace Superbird B2 communications satellite in Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO).
