In the war for public opinion, Russian State television (Channel One) has released the “satellite image” below during November apparently showing a Ukrainian fighter jet launching a missile at Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 which was shot down over Ukraine in July. Initial findings by the Dutch-led accident inquiry note that the aircraft was struck by “high energy” objects. The main theory at present being is that the Boeing 777 aircraft on flight MH17 was shot down by a shrapnel from an exploding warhead of a Russian-built SA-11 “Buk” surface-to-air missile in the control of separatist rebels.
Analysts have scorned the newly released satellite photograph pointing several inaccuracies including the markings of the “target aircraft” not being for Malaysian Airlines, the aircraft being the wrong type (a Boeing 767 rather than the actual Boeing 777), and that the cloud pattern has apparently been lifted from an earlier image.
