Sierra Nevada Corp (SNC) has announced on 14 October 2014 that, after a competition, its Space Systems Division in Louisville, Colorada, USA has been awarded a contract to build a new technology demonstration satellite for the US Department of Defense Space Test Program (STP). The spacecraft will be known as STPSat-5 and will carry four payloads examining the space environment and its effect on components. The satellite is expected to be launched in the last quarter of 2016. The STPSat-5 contract is supervised by NASA’s Ames Research Center based in Silicon Valley, California and managed by the US Air Force’s Space and Missile Systems Center at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico.
