In a deal worth a reported US$49 billion, the US telecommunications firm AT&T has announced it is to acquire the satellite direct broadcasting firm DirecTV. In the deal AT&T has offered US$95 per share, split as US$28.50 as cash and the rest as AT&T stock. The deal would give AT&T 20 million satellite television subscribers to add to its own cable television client base. The acquisition will also give AT&T the DirecTV satellite fleet of 11 active spacecraft which may allow it to move more into mobile communications and broadcasting services.
